Middle and High School Counselor

Reports To: Building Principal and/or District Administrator

Supervises: None

Job Goal

The School Counselor is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing a comprehensive school counseling program that supports students' academic achievement, social-emotional well-being, support transitions, and personal growth. The School Counselor collaborates with students, families, staff, and community partners to remove barriers to learning and ensure all students have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

School Counseling Program Development and Management

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with district goals and student needs.
  • Utilize student data, including academic performance, attendance, behavioral indicators, and other relevant measures, to identify student needs and inform counseling services and interventions.
  • Monitor program effectiveness and make recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with administration to develop annual counseling priorities and services that address student needs.

Direct Student Services

  • Provide individual and group counseling to support students' academic, social-emotional, behavioral, and personal development.
  • Deliver preventive and responsive counseling services that promote student success, resilience, and well-being.
  • Assist students with educational planning, goal setting, decision-making, and career exploration.
  • Support students in developing self-advocacy, problem-solving, interpersonal, and coping skills.
  • Identify students in need of additional support and facilitate referrals to appropriate school and community resources.
  • Provide crisis intervention and participate as a member of the school's crisis response team.

Collaboration and Consultation

  • Consult and collaborate with teachers, administrators, families, and support staff to address student needs and develop appropriate interventions.
  • Participate in Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), Response to Intervention (RtI), Child Study Teams, and other school-based teams.
  • Assist staff in understanding student needs and interpreting relevant student data to support academic and behavioral success.
  • Promote an inclusive school climate that values diversity, equity, and belonging for all students.
  • Foster positive relationships among students, families, school personnel, and community organizations.

Family and Community Engagement

  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, concerns, and available supports.
  • Assist families in accessing school and community resources through appropriate referrals and follow-up.
  • Serve as a liaison between school, home, and community agencies when appropriate to support student success.
  • Maintain confidentiality and uphold professional and ethical standards in all interactions.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation in accordance with district, state, and federal requirements.
  • Provide professional learning opportunities and consultation to staff on topics related to student development, mental health, and academic success.
  • Attend faculty meetings, professional development activities, and district trainings as required.
  • Remain current with best practices, legal requirements, and professional standards in school counseling.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal, District Administrator, or Superintendent's designee.

Minimum Qualifications

  • New York State Certification as a School Counselor.
  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds preferred.

Requirements

  • Fingerprint clearance through NYSED TEACH.
  • Successful completion of all required pre-employment screenings, including drug testing, TB test, and physical examination.

Terms of Employment

  • Ten-month school year.
  • Up to five (5) additional summer days at the approved per diem rate.
  • Salary and benefits established by the Board of Education and applicable collective bargaining agreement. follows the ATA contract step schedule – (Step 1 - $49,037 - $55,000).

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated by administration in accordance with district procedures and the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
